I would say that only half of the Thanksgivings in my life have we had turkey. They were mostly wild turkeys taken while hunting. The few times we had to buy turkeys the flavor was just bland. Few people know how a turkey really tastes. The other Thanksgivings we had venison, harvested by me or my wife or Dad. I like that word harvested. It doesn’t sound like any thing died. It keeps the sheep people from saying”Oh, my gawd”.

I apologise ahead of time for assuming anything about you, but from reading your blog I had always thought you were a vegetarian and so was surprised to see this story.

I would like to say though how much I enjoy your blog. It’s always thought provoking and interesting. I don’t know if your old enough to remember Organic Gardener or Mother Earth news in it’s original format but your blog is much like them. They exist no more in their original form but your blog has certainly carried their messages forward.

Punk Gardener reply on November 17th, 2008:

I am a vegetarian now,for health & carbon footprint reasons, but I’ve killed, dressed & eaten birds. Used to love venison too– wild meat can have much better flavor than industrial meat, imo.
& I am indeed old enough to take comparisons to Mother Earth News as a high compliment- thanks!
