Austin rains

We had a few. Not enough to make a dent in our drought.
Anyone else starting to wonder if the Hill Country might start looking more like West Texas desert if this keeps up?
I’m planting trees all around the house & getting rain barrels next Spring. We’ve also been talking about drip irrigation instillation.
Creating water conservative micro climates is the meme du jour around here lately.
So, fellow CenTex, gardeners– what are your plans, if any, in dealing with all this dry?

Bummer– we only got a brief shower, but usually you guys are the ones to soak while we are parched :(

I can tell you what I have been doing for months and that is taking the bucket into the shower with me and collecting a bucket full of water before the water gets hot! I am also washing all my veg. in a bowl and watering the plants with the water. All our water is sprayed on our septic field but this is going on the garden. It’s not much but at least it helps keep the plants alive. We had 1″ yesterday.

Excellent use of water that would otherwise be wasted!

I dont know how handy you are with tools, but just a suggestion. Instead of rain barrels you can get 55 gal. plastic drums for 5 to 15 dollars. You do have to cut the hole in the top your self but it is much cheaper than buying those rain barrels.

Where can you buy the 55 gallon drums?

I’ve seen the drums at feed stores, small building supplies and sometimes at Tractor Supply. You should look up the Rain Man, rain water collection place in Dripping Springs. They have some small cisterns, 200 to 250 gal. size for what you would pay for several of the rain barrels.
