Or people could, cut back on meat & buy raw veggies & grains & cook from scratch. & hey, maybe even start gardens.

    Cooking… I’ve been digging the crock pot that my roommate introduced me to (and I semi-regularly scold my Mom for never having shown us the way of the crockpot!) … so I’ve been wondering, are there stationary bicycles sold (or kits to build) that harness exercise efforts and output electricity in household-usable form? If a person can’t peddal enough to power a crockpot, fine, but what about powering a recharger for a set of AA rechargables?

    Seems like you might’ve seen something like this :)

    How about a solar cooker– they give the same yummy slow cooked goodness as a crockpot (& I know I’ve seen plans online for building one’s own):
